How can teachers keep a log of their students’ writing?

The trick is to make the students responsible for it. I’ve been using this writing log graphic organizer for a number of years, and my students have said that it helped them get organized and set goals in a tangible way.

The trick is to do all of these things:

  • Use the six traits of good writing to score students’ papers.
  • Have students transfer scores from their six traits scoring rubric to the six traits writing log.
  • Revisit the writing log before you do another writing assignment, so they can review the goals they set for themselves.
  • Review the log at the end of the year, to see how far they’ve come.
