    *1. Tolkien served as a signals officer at the Somme, participating in the Battle of Thiepval Ridge and the subsequent assault on the Schwaben Redoubt.

    *2. Tolkien’s first civilian job after World War I was at the Oxford English Dictionary, where he worked mainly on the history and etymology of words of Germanic origin beginning with the letter W.

Tolkien learned Latin, French, and German from his mother, and while at school he learned Middle English, Old English, Finnish, Gothic, Greek, Italian, Old Norse, Spanish, Welsh, and Medieval Welsh. He was also familiar with Danish, Dutch, Lombardic, Norwegian, Icelandic, Russian, Swedish, Middle Dutch, Middle High German, Middle Low German, Old High German, Old Slavonic, and Lithuanian.

  4. i learned that he was a rawlinson and bosworth professor of anglo-saxon at oxford university from 1925 to 1945, a merton professor for english language and literature there from 1945 to 1959, and there are five blue plaques dedicated to him at some of the coleges

  7. Three things I’ve learned with research about Tolkien are:

    *J.R.R. Tolkien’s son, Christopher, published a series of books based on his father’s extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, making a connection to his father’s published books, The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series.

    *Forbes magazine ranked him as the 5th top-earning dead celebrity of 2009.

    *Most of Tolkien’s ancestors and previous generations had careers as crafstmen.

  8. He went to the army as a reserve so that he could finish at his college.
    He married a woman named Edith.
    Edith and tolkein were in love and tolkein was told that he couldnt have a realationship with her because it was effecting his studies. So tolkein did what he was told and after a few years past tolkein went back to marry Edith and found out she was alredy getting married to another man. tolkein was sad but edith and tolkein meet again and found they were still in deep love and got married.

  10. I learned that he is dead… I thought he was still alive. I learned that J.R.R. stands for John Ronald Reuel. And that his son, Christopher, published his unfinish works, such as The Silmarillion.
