Now that you’ve read to page 160, it’s probably very clear to you that The Hobbit has many small conflicts within the plot. Here are just a few of them:
- Bilbo doesn’t want to leave his comfortable hobbit hole
- Bilbo is confronted by trolls
- Bilbo gets lost in the goblins’ caves, separated from his dwarven friends
- the Wargs chase Bilbo and his friends into trees
- giant eagles scoop them up and fly away with them
- they get lost in the black forest of Mirkwood
- they come to an enchanted river and can travel no further without some means to cross
- giant spiders try to eat them
I’m sure you’ve been following along in the novel, so you already know how each of these conflicts is resolved. But what if you were to change one element of the setting or characters? Would it have changed the outcome?
Write an alternate resolution to one of these conflicts by changing just one element of the setting or the protagonist. At the end of your journal entry, give the details on a.) what was the REAL conflict from the book, b.) what is the new resolution, and c.) what element of character or setting did you change. Here’s an example:
EXAMPLE: I’m using the scene where Bilbo confronts the trolls. I’m changing Bilbo Baggins from a hobbit to a vacuum cleaner salesman. Here’s how my version of the story would go:
Realizing his friends were being held hostage by the trolls, Bilbo whipped out his Hoover display set and stood before the trolls boldly. “Gentlemen,” he said, “before you, stands the deal of a lifetime! I call it the Critter Sucker.”
“Whah? Huh?” The dumbfounded trolls cocked their heads like curious pups.
Bilbo spoke rapidly as he assembled his battery-operated high-powered vac in the flickering firelight. “With the touch of a button, you can suck up rabbits, squirrels–heck you might even be able to capture a moose or a human being. Let me demonstrate on one of these dwarves, for example.”
Bilbo turned on the power button, and the vacuum cleaner roared to life. At the sound of the machine, trolls, dwarves, and even a couple of bats in the trees scattered with a flurry. Bilbo found himself alone in the clearing, seated next to the trolls’ cozy fire, the whirring vacuum in hand. But hey, at least his friends were free.
CONFLICT: Bilbo is confronted by trolls.
RESOLUTION: Bilbo frightens the trolls away with his advanced technology.
CHANGE: I’ve changed Bilbo from a hobbit to a vacuum cleaner salesman.
